Here we go again – the data engineer galore! Last time we talked about Junior and Middle level salaries for Ukrainian Data Engineers. And before that we analysed the talent demand.

Now is the time to talk about senior and lead level Data Engineer salaries as seen during Q4 2025.

You know the drill.

  • Data engineering is currently one of the most competitive roles in the Ukrainian tech market.
  • Companies need people who can store, clean, and operationalize it for real product and business value.
  • Fintech, defence tech, banking, enterprise, cybersecurity, and the booming AI/ML sector are all scrambling for engineers who can build reliable data infrastructure.

But the Ukrainian Tech Segment faces a structural talent shortage.

  • Many senior and lead level engineers are mobilised;
  • Junior and middle level talent lacks proper development and career opportunities;
  • companies hire too quickly but not too efficiently resulting in talent churn and salary bloat.

That’s where we are Q4 2025. Now let’s talk about money.

What’s so special about Senior & Lead Data Engineer Salaries?

Let’s break down what makes senior & lead salaries so fascinating.

Senior & Lead Data Engineers are now among the most sought-after professionals in the entire Ukrainian tech segment.

  • Other senior roles (you know – QA or  most shades of backend and frontend) that tend to swing into oversupply.

Well, ain’t happening here.

  • Senior data engineers never hit the market in meaningful quantities. There is just enough talent but not enough to be selective about it.

So the reality of the situation is the following:

  • The need is constant;
  • The pool is tiny;
  • The gap keeps widening.

This chronic shortage fuels competition for talent across the sector.

  • Almost every company – banks and fintech bros, defence tech startups, AI hotshot products – run long-term sourcing operations to hire away senior and lead data engineers.
  • Many vacancies remain open for months even though there’s aggressive outbound recruiting, agency involvement, and internal referrals.
  • It’s not that companies can’t find candidates. They find them a lot. But they can’t convince them to change jobs. Sometimes they fail to convince them to consider the opportunity too because their recruitment sucks.
  • The reason is simple. Not enough trust in the opportunity and the proposition is not substantially beneficial to change jobs.

This structural imbalance reshapes salary dynamics at the senior level.

  • Senior and lead data engineers effectively operate in their own economic universe.
  • Compensation packages stop following the typical salary ladder.
  • Instead, they turn into case-by-case negotiations dictated by scarcity, urgency, and business dependency on data systems.

Senior & Lead Data Engineer Salaries Explained

The overall salary range median for the Ukrainian Data Engineers currently revolves around $3200 and $4500 figures respectively and everything in-between.

This means two things:

  • That’s a lot for the median.
  • It’s a sign of market segmentation. Pretty much each niche got its own range for data engineers at this point.

This is very prominent for senior and lead level talent but less so for juniors and middles.

Several prominent patterns emerged over the year:

  • Q1 2025 benefitted from from the late 2024 hiring rebound. It went nowhere by the time Q2 2025 started but it resulted in a salary growth spike that threw its shadow on the rest of the year.
  • The median salary as of Q1 2025 was around $3900-4200 depending on the niche.
  • However, during Q2 and Q3 2025 things have changed drastically as companies started to “optimize”, i.e. playing checkers with hiring and firing.
    • Because of that, a lot of data engineers lost their jobs.
    • A lot of data engineers also found new jobs.
    • Retention is for top tier talent only.

As a result, the salary dynamics for data engineers during 2025 had fractured.

  • Instead of one more or less unified range with dynamics applicable across the Ukrainian segment we have at least six distinct strands that move their own way.
    • Telecom and streaming.
    • eCommerce;
    • Fintech and banking;
    • Military tech;
    • Cybersecurity
    • Enterprise;
    • AI startups;

Let’s look at them closer.

Data Engineer Salary Dynamics in Fintech and Banking

  • The senior data engineer range for fintech and banking is the most stable out of the bunch.
  • Lead range is somewhat similar but got more outlier on the upper end.
  • The range averages throughout 2025 start with $2800 (the lowest out of all distinct segments) and go all the way to $5900 (which is more of a lead level salary figure all things considered).
  • However, the most consistent upper part is closer to $5500.
  • The median revolves around $3600 and $3900 figures depending on the complexity of the role and operational context. For banking it is closer to $3600 while fintech moves closer to $3900.

Enterprise + AI startups

Don’t play drinking bingo with this one.

  • So, as usual, the AI startup segment is a mess.
    • For data engineers it is doubly so.
      • Even more so for senior data engineers.
        • Because Artificial Intelligence products just happen to run on copious amounts of data that require intricate infrastructure with refined solutions.
        • It is what it is.

The thing with AI product senior data engineer salary dynamics is that it ALL OVER THE PLACE.

  • Like you can name a random figure in-between $2500 and $6600 and it is safe to guess it is within the salary range.
  • Why it is so? Moving fast and breaking things is one reason. Hype beast grifting to make a quick buck on a dead end solution is another.
  • The salaries are high. The highest they can be in this economy (excluding military projects for obvious reasons. But there is almost no longevity in these high salaries.
    • It can be in high $5000 figures for 9 months and then puff gone.

But I digress.

  • The salary range median revolves around $3100 and $3900 figures for seniors.
  • Lead salary media is around $4500 and $5200.

Let’s unpack this range width in order of its ascension.

  • Niche-specific Chatbot / Assistant / Agent API extravaganza;
  • Predictive Analytics for banking, eCommerce, MarTech, AdTech
  • Computer vision / Image Recognition for image editing, eCommerce,
  • Speech Recognition – for content and customer support.
  • Robotic Process Automation for hardware production and general consumer use.
  • LLM NLP – the underlying specialized infrastructure behind the aforementioned chatbots, assistants and agents.
  • Personalisation / recommendation algorithms – for streaming platforms and advertising.
  • Security tools – automated penetration testing, social engineering scenarios, employee training, system monitoring.

The range itself looks like this:

  • The lower end for seniors goes all the way down to $2500.
  • For leads it is $4000.
  • The upper end for seniors goes all the way up to $5500 although $4800 is a more consistently present upper range.
  • At the same time, for lead data engineers it is $6600 although $5700 is the most consistent high range figure.

Defense/Military Tech Data Engineer Salaries Explained

This one is complicated. Not a lot of data is openly available to analyse and talent involved in these kinds of projects doesn’t like to talk about it.

But you can approximate what kind of money moves in the niche by its adjacent niches. Namely:

  • Cybersecurity
  • RPA AI
  • Image / Speech Recognition AI
  • Embedded software;

Combining data from these niches allows us to understand the general shape of the salary dynamics within the defense/military tech segment. Make of it what you will.

  • The range swings between $2600 and $4600 figures for seniors and $3800 and $5500 figures for leads.
  • The median is around $3500 and $4600 respectively.
  • For seniors, the extremums go all the way down to $1800 on some projects and all the way up to $5300.
  • For leads it is all the way down to $3000 (yup) and all the way up to $6000.

Cybersecurity Data Engineer Salary Dynamics

You might expect it is going to be a mess once more but you’re wrong. There’s just too much stuff going on with cybersecurity data engineering. To the point you need to differentiate it into its own thing.

There are data engineers who handle:

  • operational pipeline;
  • predictive analytics;
  • model training that handle logs;
  • agents that test systems and simulate attacks;
  • agents that provide system audit;

That’s at least five distinct domains with data engineers involved. You know how it goes – that’s gonna be a specific article.

Overall, the range looks like this:

  • $3700 senior median.
  • $5100 lead median.
  • Senior range rolls around $3200 and $4600 figures.
  • Lead range is between $4500 and $5800.

AdTech + eCommerce + Telecom and Streaming Data Engineer Salary Ranges

These are run of the mill operations for data engineers with their primary occupation being automation and all sorts of predictive analytics. Given the similarity of the ranges – it makes sense to bundle them into one section.

The overall range looks like this:

  • The combined range swings between $2700 and $4900 figures for seniors and $3200 and $5000 figures for leads.
  • The combined median is somewhere in around the $3400 figure for seniors.
  • For leads – it is around $4400. Except for one telecommunications company with monopoly aspirations that pays less and sags the market.
  • The senior extremums go all the way down to $1500 (told ya there are some cheapskates). The upper extremum is around $5200.
  • For leads it is $2500 and $5700.

In conclusion

The dynamics of data engineer salaries throughout 2025 have been nothing short of chaotic. A mix of talent scarcity and attrition has created an unnatural supply-and-demand environment, distorting perceptions and causing dramatic swings in both salary ranges and talent valuation.

This trend is likely to continue into 2026, albeit with more gradual shifts. Cybersecurity remains the most intriguing area of data engineering, attracting a highly dynamic talent pool. Meanwhile, enterprise AI and startup AI are steadily emerging as key talent hubs, shaping the workforce as much as the organizations that employ it.
